Every so often I get a rush of blood to the head and make something unusual. Some of these items are sold, some are still available. you get an idea of what is possible with old textiles and other materials. Commissions will always be considered - whether they are possible or not will depend on the available materials.
This rag rug, about 4ft x 2ft, is made from woven wools mostly plaid rugs and tweed. All the 'solid' colours are made from twill woven fabrics with mingled tones, or are carefully made up from a range of close-toned wools to give a fleckled, sparkly effect. The back is loose-woven hessian; as the strips of fabric are looped through, the weave tightens and holds the strips tightly together.
Rag rugs can also be made from knitted textiles, or from cottons and linens. They are time-consuming to make but a good project to try for yourself! |
The vintage recipe mirror has now sold, but this one (left) is currently still available. It's made using original 1940s 'Stitchcraft' magazines and knitting patterns, on a base of a vintage wooden-framed mirror.
Decoupage is not the most robust of materials, and these mirrors are not suitable for steamy situations as the paper will inevitably absorb the moisture. To avoid fading, it is best not to hang them in direct sunlight. |
