Moth bags that really keep the moth away, smell pleasant,
and don't contain any nasty chemicals!
You can buy so-called "floral" moth repellents in any hardware shop. I've never worked out what they contain, but the smell is not merely very unpleasant, it lingers in a nauseating way. Maybe they keep the moth away, but that's little consolation if the garment smells so awful you never want to wear it. Even traditional moth-balls, for all their aura of old ladies, are less disgusting. Lavender smells lovely, but only does a moderate job of deterring the moths. Hmmmm . . .
Fortunately, there is a traditional moth-repellent which works very well, smells pleasantly aromatic, and keeps up its moth-deterring properties for several years. A herb well-known to generations gone by, its Latin name is Artemisia abrotanum, but it has been known in cottage gardens for centuries as Lads Love, Southernwood, or Old Man. |

"Make Do & Mend" moth sachets contain dried lavender and dried Southernwood. The herbs are grown in my own garden without chemicals or pesticides - obviously they're not certified as I am not a commercial producer, but they are grown using organic products and air-dried over the Rayburn.
They have a pleasant aromatic scent which is suitable for both the male and female wardrobe. In over 30 years of use they have always done an excellent job of deterring moths. However they do not kill moths or their larvae (which are the ones which nosh yer jumpers). If suspect you already have moths in residence, either wash the clothes and dry them outside, or bundle them up and put them in the freezer for several days. If not washable, hang them outside in bright sunlight in late spring or summer!
